The Power of Silence

고요의 힘

It was a hot summer day.

무더운 여름날이었다.

 

Joe was happy.

Joe는 행복했다.

 

His grandchildren were on their way to his house.

그의 손주들이 그의 집에 오고 있었다.

 

He cleaned the house and cooked dinner for them.

그는 손주들을 위해 집을 청소하고 저녁밥을 했다.

 

He was busy all day.

그는 하루 종일 분주했다.

 

Finally, the kids got to Joe’s house.

드디어 아이들이 Joe의 집에 왔다.

 

They sat happily at the dinner table.

그들은 행복하게 저녁 식탁에 앉았다.

 

Then, one kid asked, “Grandpa, where is your watch?”

그때, 한 아이가 물었다. “할아버지, 할아버지 시계는 어디 있어요?”

 

Everybody knew the watch.

모두가 그 시계를 알고 있었다.

 

It was a gift from Joe’s dead wife.

시계는 Joe의 죽은 아내의 선물이었다.

 

He was shocked. “Oh, no! I lost it somewhere.”

그는 깜짝 놀랐다. “이런! 어디서 잃어버렸구나.”

 

The children asked, “Grandpa, where did you last see the watch?”

아이들이 물었다. “할아버지, 시계를 마지막으로 보신 곳이 어디예요?”

 

Joe said, “Maybe in the barn.”

Joe는 말했다. “아마도 헛간 같은데.”

 

The kids ran out to the barn.

아이들은 헛간으로 달려 나갔다.

 

They looked in every corner.

그들은 구석구석을 다 뒤져 봤다.

 

But they couldn’t find the watch.

하지만 시계를 찾을 수가 없었다.

 

Joe was disappointed.

Joe는 낙담했다.

 

Amber, one of the kids, didn’t give up.

아이들 중 하나인 Amber는 포기하지 않았다.

 

“I’ll try again.”

“제가 다시 찾아볼게요.”

 

She went inside the barn alone and closed the door.

그녀는 혼자 헛간 안으로 들어가 문을 닫았다.

 

Everybody was curious.

모두들 궁금했다.

 

Surprisingly, a few minutes later, she came out with the watch.

놀랍게도 몇 분 뒤 Amber는 시계를 가지고 나왔다.

 

Joe was surprised and asked happily, “How did you find it?”

Joe는 깜짝 놀랐고, 행복하게 물었다. “어떻게 찾은 거니?”

 

She answered, “I just sat there quietly.

그녀가 대답했다. “그냥 거기 조용히 앉아 있었어요.

 

The barn was very silent.

헛간은 굉장히 조용했어요.

 

Soon I heard a weak sound—ticktock, ticktock, ticktock.

곧 희미한 똑딱똑딱 소리가 들렸어요.

 

I followed the sound and found the watch.”

그 소리를 따라가서 시계를 찾았지요.”
