Frindle

Nick Allen was excited about starting fifth grade, but he was worried about one thing―Mrs. Granger’s English class.

Nick Allen은 5학년이 시작되는 것이 신났지만, 한 가지가 걱정되었다. 그것은 Granger 선생님의 영어 수업이었다.

 

Mrs. Granger was famous for her difficult vocabulary lessons.

Granger 선생님은 어려운 어휘 수업으로 유명했다.

 

In the first class, Mrs. Granger said, “Everyone should have a good dictionary.

첫 번째 시간에 Granger 선생님은 말씀하셨다. “모두 좋은 사전을 가지고 있어야 해요.

 

You can look up the meanings of new words in it.”

여러분은 사전에서 새 단어의 뜻을 찾을 수 있어요.”

 

“Mrs. Granger? Who decides the meanings of words?

“Granger 선생님? 단어의 뜻은 누가 정하나요?

 

I mean, who decided that ‘dog’ means an animal that barks?” Nick asked.

그러니까, ‘개’는 짖는 동물을 뜻한다고 누가 정했나요?” Nick이 물었다.

 

“You did, Nick. You, me, and the entire town and country.

“네가 그랬지, Nick. 너와 나, 그리고 온 마을과 나라가 말이야.

 

We all agreed. That gives the word its meaning.”

우리 모두가 동의했단다. 그게 그 단어에게 의미를 부여하는 거야.”

 

Nick wasn’t satisfied.

Nick은 마음에 들지 않았다.

 

“When did I agree?” he said to himself.

“내가 언제 동의했지?” 그는 혼잣말을 했다.

 

On the way home, he decided to test Mrs. Granger’s idea.

집으로 가는 길에, 그는 Granger 선생님의 생각을 시험하기로 결심했다.

 

He took out a pen and said, “From today, this is a frindle.”

그는 펜을 하나 꺼내서 말했다. “오늘부터, 이것은 ‘frindle’이야.”

 

The next day, he asked five friends to use the word frindle.

During class, Nick said, “Mrs. Granger, I forgot my frindle today.”

His friend, John, held up a pen and said, “I have an extra frindle.

Do you want to borrow my frindle?”

Mrs. Granger was not pleased.

She said, “Your new word is cute, but it already has a perfectly good name―a pen.”

선생님이 말씀하셨다. “너희들의 새 단어는 귀엽지만, 그건 이미 ‘pen’이라는 완벽하게 좋은 이름이 있단다.”

 

Nick’s classmates found this funny and began to use the word more and more.

Nick의 학급 친구들은 이것을 재미있어 했고 더더욱 그 단어를 사용하기 시작했다.

 

In just three days, it became the cool word at school.

단지 3일 만에, 그것은 학교에서 멋진 단어가 되었다.

 

Mrs. Granger said to Nick after class, “This is getting out of hand.

Granger 선생님은 수업 후에 Nick에게 말씀하셨다. “점점 손을 쓸 수 없게 되어 가는구나.

 

Can you tell your friends to stop saying frindle?”

“I’m sorry, but I can’t stop it. It started as my word, but now it’s the students’ word.”

“Very well. Then I have no choice.”

“좋아. 그러면 선택의 여지가 없구나.”

 

Mrs. Granger took out an envelope and asked Nick to sign and date the back.

Granger 선생님은 봉투를 하나 꺼내시더니 Nick에게 뒷면에 서명을 하고 날짜를 적게 하셨다.

 

She said, “I’ll give this letter to you when all this is over.”

선생님은 말씀하셨다. “이 모든 것이 끝나면 내가 이 편지를 너에게 줄게.”

 

Nick thought, “She really hates me.”

Nick은 생각했다. “선생님은 내가 정말 싫으신가 봐.”

 

Next week, Mrs. Granger began a war with frindle.

다음 주에, Granger 선생님은 ‘frindle’과의 전쟁을 시작하셨다.

 

She said that she would punish any student for using it.

선생님은 그 단어를 사용한다면 어떤 학생이든 벌을 줄 것이라고 말씀하셨다.

 

But this only made things worse.

The students wanted to use the word more and more.

Frindle quickly spread to nearby middle and high schools.

Shortly after, a local newspaper reporter wrote an article on the situation and everyone in town knew about it.

곧, 지역 신문 기자가 그 상황에 관한 기사를 썼고, 마을의 모든 사람들이 그것에 관해 알게 되었다.

 

A month later, a national television station covered the news and everyone found out about frindle.

한 달 후에, 한 전국 텔레비전 방송국에서 그 소식을 다루었고, 모든 사람들이 ‘frindle’에 관해 알게 되었다.

 

By the time Nick graduated from elementary school, most students in the country used the word.

Nick이 초등학교를 졸업할 때쯤에는, 이 나라의 대부분의 학생들이 그 단어를 사용했다.

 

Time flew by and Nick turned 21.

시간은 흘러 Nick은 21살이 되었다.

 

One day, he received a package.

어느 날, Nick은 소포를 하나 받았다.

 

Inside it, he found a pen, an envelope and a dictionary.

소포 안에는 펜 한 자루, 봉투 한 장, 그리고 사전 한 권이 있었다.

 

The envelope had his signature from fifth grade.

봉투에는 5학년 때의 그의 서명이 있었다.

 

The dictionary had a yellow note.

사전에는 노란색 쪽지가 있었다.

 

It said, “Check page 541.”

“541쪽을 확인해 봐.”라고 적혀 있었다.
