사라진 금메달!

Mr. Reese, the principal, ran across the wet playground.

Reese 교장은 젖은 운동장을 달려왔다.

 

“Shirley! Shirley! I need your help!”

“Shirley! Shirley! 네 도움이 필요하구나!”

 

Shirley was an eighth grade student at Bakersville Middle School.

Shirley는 Bakersville 중학교의 8학년 학생이었다.

 

She was also the best detective in the whole town.

그녀는 또한 그 마을 최고의 탐정이었다.

 

“Is there something wrong?” asked Shirley.

“무슨 일이 있나요?” Shirley가 물었다.

 

“Someone has stolen the gold medal for the talent show!”

“누군가 장기 자랑 대회 금메달을 훔쳐갔어!”

 

Mr. Reese took Shirley to the scene of the crime.

 Reese 교장은 Shirley를 범죄 현장으로 데려갔다.

 

There was a case with a broken window.

유리창이 깨진 진열장이 있었다.

 

The silver and bronze medals were still there.

은메달과 동메달은 여전히 그곳에 있었다.

 

But the gold medal was missing.

하지만 금메달은 사라졌다.

 

There was a poem in its place.

그 자리에는 시가 있었다.

 

Tomorrow is the talent show.

Where did the gold medal go?

Look high and low.

You can’t catch me. You’re too slow.

내일은 장기 자랑 대회이다.

금메달은 어디로 갔을까?

구석구석 찾아라.

당신은 나를 잡을 수 없어. 당신은 너무 느려.

 

Shirley asked, “Could you tell me when this happened?”

Shirley는 “언제 이 사건이 일어났는지 말씀해 주시겠어요?”라고 물었다.

 

“A little after nine last night. I was making my rounds when I heard a scream.

“어젯밤 9시가 조금 넘은 후에. 내가 비명 소리를 들었을 때 나는 순찰을 돌고 있었어.

 

I rushed over and found Jocelyn and the case like this.”

나는 달려가서 Jocelyn과 이 상태인 진열장을 발견했지.”

 

“I wonder who else was here last night.”

“어젯밤에 또 다른 누가 여기 있었는지 궁금해요.”

 

“Sylvia and Harry. They were also practicing for the talent show. I’ll call them to my office.”

“Sylvia와 Harry가 있었어. 그들 또한 장기 자랑 대회를 위해 연습 중이었어. 내가 그들을 내 사무실로 부르마.”

 

Jocelyn was a ninth grade student with short curly red hair.

Jocelyn은 빨간색 짧은 곱슬머리를 가진 9학년 학생이었다.

 

“I was practicing my song and I became thirsty.

“저는 제 노래를 연습하고 있었고 목이 말랐어요.

 

I stepped outside the classroom to get some water.

저는 물을 좀 가지러 교실 밖으로 나갔어요.

 

It was completely dark.

완전히 어두웠어요.

 

Suddenly, there was a loud sound of thunder.

갑자기, 커다란 천둥소리가 났어요.

 

I think the thief broke the window at that moment.

저는 도둑이 그 순간에 유리창을 깼다고 생각해요.

 

Lightning followed right after and it became bright for a second or two.

번개가 바로 뒤따랐고 1~2초 정도 밝아졌어요.

 

Then I saw someone running away from the case.”

그때 저는 누군가가 진열장에서 도망치는 걸 봤어요.”

 

“Did you see the thief’s face?”

“도둑의 얼굴을 봤나요?”

 

“No, I only saw the thief’s back. But the thief had short hair.”

“아니요, 도둑의 뒷모습만 봤어요. 하지만 그 도둑은 짧은 머리였어요.”

 

Next was an eighth grade student, Sylvia.

다음은 8학년 학생인 Sylvia였다.

 

She was tall with long black hair.

그녀는 긴 검은색 머리에 키가 컸다.

 

She said, “I was reading my poem aloud in the classroom.

그녀는 말했다. “저는 교실에서 큰 소리로 제 시를 낭송하고 있었어요.

 

I heard a scream and went outside.

비명 소리를 듣고 밖으로 나갔어요.

 

There was a girl next to the case.

진열장 옆에 한 소녀가 있었어요.

 

With the flash from the lightning, it was like a horror movie.

번개의 번쩍임과 어우러져 그것은 공포 영화 같았어요.

 

I got scared so I ran straight home.”

저는 겁이 나서 곧장 집으로 달려갔어요.”

 

“Did you hear the window break?”

“유리창이 깨지는 소리를 들었나요?”

 

“No, the thunder was too loud.

“아니요, 천둥소리가 너무 컸어요.

 

Well, I didn’t do it. I was going to win first place anyway.”

음, 제가 그런 게 아니에요. 저는 어쨌든 1등을 할 거였으니까요.”

 

Harry, a seventh grader, had short blond hair.

7학년인 Harry는 짧은 금발을 가지고 있었다.

 

He said, “Hey, you got the wrong guy.

그는 말했다. “이봐요, 사람을 잘못짚었어요.

 

I was practicing my dance moves.

저는 제 춤 동작을 연습하고 있었어요.

 

I went home a little before nine.

저는 9시 조금 전에 집에 갔어요.

 

I didn’t take one step outside the classroom until then.”

저는 그때까지 교실 밖으로 한 발자국도 나가지 않았어요.”

 

“Did you hear anything strange?”

 “이상한 소리를 들었나요?”

 

“How could I? My music was really loud.”

“제가 어떻게 듣겠어요? 제 음악 소리가 정말 컸어요.”

 

“Did you see anyone on the way home?”

“집에 가는 길에 누군가를 보았나요?”

 

“No, I heard someone singing really badly, but I didn’t see anyone.”

“아니요, 누군가가 노래를 정말 끔찍하게 부르는 것을 들었지만, 누구도 보진 못했어요.”

 

Shirley said, “I don’t need to hear anymore.”

Shirley는 “더 이상 들을 필요가 없겠네요.”라고 말했다.

 

Then she turned to the thief.

그러고 나서 그녀는 도둑을 향했다.

 

“Why don’t you bring the medal back before you get into some real trouble?"

“정말 곤경에 빠지기 전에 금메달을 돌려주는 게 어때요?”
