A Robotic Hand from a Helpful Mind (Easton LaChappelle)

One day, when I was fourteen, I came across a little girl at a science fair.

내가 열네 살이었을 때, 어느 날 한 과학 박람회에서 나는 어린 소녀를 우연히 만났다.

 

She had a robotic hand that could only open and close.

그녀는 단지 펴고 오므릴 수만 있는 로봇 손을 착용하고 있었다.

 

I was surprised that the hand had cost her 80,000 dollars!

나는 그녀가 그 손에 8만 달러를 지불했다는 데 놀랐다!

 

‘I wish she had a better robotic hand,’ I thought to myself.

‘나는 그녀가 더 나은 로봇 손을 가지고 있다면 좋겠어.’라고 마음속으로 생각했다.

 

With that, I started to make a much cheaper and better robotic hand.

그러고는 나는 훨씬 더 저렴하고 더 나은 로봇 손을 만들기 시작했다.

 

After many failures, finally, by using 3D printing technology, I was able to make a useful robotic hand for the price of only 300 dollars.

많은 실패 후에 마침내 나는 3D 프린트 기술을 사용해서 단 300달러짜리의 유용한 로봇 손을 만들 수 있었다.

 

I decided to share the designs and software for my 3D robotic hand with others for free.

나는 내 3D 로봇 손의 디자인과 소프트웨어를 다른 사람들과 무료로 공유하기로 결심했다.

 

Maybe someone can take what I have done and do something useful with it.

'Why can't many girls in Africa go to school as I can? I wish they could go to school, too.'

‘아프리카의 많은 소녀들은 왜 나처럼 학교에 갈 수 없을까? 그들도 학교에 갈 수 있으면 좋을 텐데.’

 

I had this thought when I was twelve.

나는 열두 살 때 이렇게 생각했다.

 

I realized that their families couldn't afford it.

나는 그들의 가족이 그럴 만한 금전적인 여유가 없다는 것을 깨달았다.

 

I wondered if I could do something for those girls.

나는 그 소녀들을 위해 내가 무언가를 할 수 있을지 궁금했다.

 

Then I had an idea. For my birthday, I asked my parents to buy me a sewing machine.

그때 아이디어가 떠올랐다. 나는 내 생일에 부모님께 재봉틀을 하나 사 달라고 부탁했다.

 

They bought me one, and I learned how to make headbands.

그들은 내게 재봉틀을 하나 사 주셨고, 나는 머리띠를 만드는 방법을 배웠다.

 

I created ten headbands and sold them at my school.

나는 머리띠 열 개를 만들어 학교에서 그것들을 팔았다.

 

Soon, I raised enough money to send one girl in Africa to school.

곧 나는 아프리카에 있는 한 소녀를 학교에 보낼 충분한 돈을 모았다.

 

I couldn't stop there.

I started a business to help girls in Africa who couldn't go to school.

Thanks to the success of my business, I can pay the school fees for many poor girls in countries like Kenya and Uganda to go to school.

내 사업의 성공 덕분에 나는 케냐와 우간다 같은 나라에 있는 많은 가난한 소녀들이 학교에 가기 위한 수업료를 지불할 수 있다.

 

I also pay for their textbooks, uniforms, and pencils. Isn't it amazing?

My advice to you is to just do something.

When you see a need, act.

Useless Corn Cobs as Useful Water Filters (Lalita Prasida)

유용한 물 여과 장치로 쓰인 쓸모없는 옥수수 속대

As a young girl living in the countryside in India, I often found that the water around us was seriously polluted.

인도의 시골에 살고 있던 어린 소녀로서 나는 종종 우리 주변에 있는 물이 심각하게 오염되어 있는 것을 발견했다.

 

I wondered how I could solve this problem.

나는 이 문제를 내가 어떻게 해결할 수 있을지 궁금했다.

 

Then I hit on the idea to use corn cobs.

그때 옥수수 속대를 사용하는 아이디어가 떠올랐다.

 

Useless corn cobs were everywhere in my village.

쓸모없는 옥수수 속대는 우리 마을 어디에나 있었다.

 

I thought that the small holes in the corn cobs could filter dirty matter out of the polluted water.

나는 옥수수 속대의 작은 구멍들이 오염된 물속에서 더러운 물질을 걸러 낼 수 있을 거라고 생각했다.

 

One day, I picked up some dried cobs along the road, washed them, and placed them in a bowl of dirty water.

어느 날, 나는 길을 따라 가면서 마른 옥수수 속대 몇 개를 주워서 그것들을 씻어 더러운 물이 담긴 그릇에 넣었다.

 

After a while, I checked the water, and it looked much clearer.

잠시 후에 나는 그 물을 확인했는데 훨씬 더 맑게 보였다.

 

Then, using corn cobs that I had collected from farmers, I built a filtering system.

그러고 나서 나는 농부들로부터 모은 옥수수 속대를 이용하여 여과 장치를 만들었다.

 

My system removed 70 to 80 percent of the dirty matter from the water.

내가 만든 장치는 물속에서 70~80 퍼센트의 더러운 물질을 제거했다.

 

I hope my filtering system can clean up all the lakes not only in my village but also in other areas.

나는 내 여과 장치가 우리 마을뿐만 아니라 다른 지역에 있는 모든 호수를 깨끗하게 해 줄 수 있기를 희망한다.
