SCENE 1

장면 1

This is Mr. and Mrs. Loisel's home in Paris.

이곳은 파리에 있는 Loisel 부부의 집이다.

 

Although the home is nice, Mrs. Loisel is not happy.

비록 집은 좋지만, Loisel 부인은 행복하지 않다.

 

She is young and pretty, and wants a fancier life.

그녀는 젊고 예쁘며 더 화려한 삶을 원한다.

 

Mrs. Loisel: (to herself) Same old house and same boring dinners. I hate living here!

Loisel 부인: (혼잣말로) 똑같은 오래된 집과 똑같은 지루한 식사. 난 이곳에서 살기 싫어!

 

Mr. Loisel: Matilda, I am home. Look what I have got for you!

Loisel 씨: Matilda, 나 왔소. 내가 당신을 위해 가져온 것 좀 보구려!

 

Mrs. Loisel: What is that?

Loisel 부인: 그게 뭐예요?

 

Mr. Loisel: An invitation to the Ambassador’s Ball.

Loisel 씨: 대사의 무도회 초대장이요.

 

I had to fight to get it. Everybody wanted it.

난 그걸 얻기 위해 싸우기까지 해야 했소. 모두가 그걸 원했거든.

 

Mrs. Loisel: (crying) Why would I want it?

Loisel 부인: (울며) 나한테 그게 왜 필요하겠어요?

 

Mr. Loisel: Matilda. What is wrong?

Loisel 씨: Matilda. 무슨 일이오?

 

Mrs. Loisel: I have nothing to wear to such a fancy party. I cannot go.

Loisel 부인: 전 그런 화려한 파티에 입고 갈 게 아무 것도 없어요. 난 못 가요.

 

Mr. Loisel: Don’t be sad. Here, I will give you 400 francs. Get yourself a beautiful new dress.

Loisel 씨: 슬퍼하지 말아요. 여기 내가 당신에게 400프랑을 주겠소. 아름다운 새 드레스를 직접 사구려.

 

SCENE 2

Mr. Loisel: (looking at Matilda’s new dress) Amazing, Matilda. Beautiful!

Loisel 씨: (Matilda의 새 드레스를 보며) 멋지구려, Matila. 아름답소!

 

Mrs. Loisel: Something is not right.

Loisel 부인: 뭔가가 맞지 않아요.

 

Mr. Loisel: What could be wrong?

Loisel 씨: 뭐가 잘못될 수 있지?

 

Mrs. Loisel: (crying) Oh, no. What am I going to do?

Loisel 부인: (울며) 오, 이런. 난 어떻게 하지?

 

Mr. Loisel: What is it, Matilda?

Loisel 씨: 무슨 일이오, Matilda?

 

Mrs. Loisel: I have no jewelry to wear with my beautiful dress. I will look so poor!

Loisel 부인: 전 이 아름다운 드레스에 걸칠 보석이 없어요. 전 아주 초라해 보일 거예요!

 

Mr. Loisel: Call on your friend, Mrs. Forestier. I am sure she will lend you some of her jewelry.

Loisel 씨: 당신 친구 Forestier 부인한테 부탁해 보구려. 그녀가 틀림없이 당신에게 그녀의 보석을 빌려줄 거요.

 

Mrs. Loisel: That is a good idea! Let me go at once.

Loisel 부인: 그거 좋은 생각이에요! 당장 가 봐야겠어요.

 

SCENE 3

장면 3

Mrs. Forestier: Matilda, it is so nice to see you! What brings you here?

Forestier 부인: Matilda, 만나서 너무 반가워요! 여긴 무슨 일이에요?

 

Mrs. Loisel: We are invited to the Ambassador's Ball.

Loisel 부인: 저희 부부가 대사 무도회에 초대받았어요.

 

Mrs. Forestier: The Ambassador's Ball! That is wonderful! You must be excited.

Forestier 부인: 대사 무도회요! 그거 멋진데요! 당신 정말 신나겠어요.

 

Mrs. Loisel: Yes... And no. I am sad to say I have no jewelry. May I borrow something from you?

Loisel 부인: 네... 아뇨. 말하기 슬프지만 제겐 보석이 없어요. 당신한테서 무언가 좀 빌릴 수 있을까요?

 

Mrs. Forestier: Sure! Here is my case.

Forestier 부인: 물론이죠! 여기 제 보석함이에요.

 

Mrs. Loisel: Wow, you have so many wonderful pieces!

Loisel 부인: 우와, 당신에게는 멋진 보석이 정말 많네요!

 

Mrs. Forestier: Choose whatever you like.

Forestier 부인: 마음에 드는 것으로 무엇이든 골라 보세요.

 

Mrs. Loisel: Would you lend me this diamond necklace? It is beautiful!

Loisel 부인: 제게 이 다이아몬드 목걸이를 빌려주실 수 있나요? 아름다워요!

 

Mrs. Forestier: Certainly! Now go enjoy the ball. 

Forestier 부인: 물론이죠! 이제 무도회를 즐기러 가세요.

 

SCENE 4

장면 4

Matilda has a perfect evening.

Matilda는 완벽한 저녁을 보낸다.

 

Everybody at the ball admires her beauty.

무도회에 있던 사람들 모두가 그녀의 아름다움을 칭찬한다.

 

It is very late when the Loisels leave the ball.

Loisel 부부가 무도회장을 떠난 것은 아주 늦은 시간이었다.

 

Mr. Loisel: It was such a long night. I am so tired.

Loisel 씨: 정말 긴 밤이었소. 나 너무 피곤하구려.

 

Mrs. Loisel: But it was worth it. Do you know I danced with the Ambassador?

Loisel 부인: 하지만 그럴 만한 가치가 있었어요. 제가 대사님과 춤췄던 거 당신도 알아요?

 

Mr. Loisel: I am glad you enjoyed yourself, but I have to go to work in the morning.

Loisel 씨: 당신이 즐거웠다니 기쁘지만 나는 아침에 출근해야 하오.

 

Mrs. Loisel: (looking in the mirror) Just one more look. (shocked) The necklace... It is gone!

Loisel 부인: (거울을 보며) 한 번만 더 보고요. (충격 받으며) 목걸이가... 그것이 없어졌어요!

 

Mr. Loisel: What? Did you have it when we left the ball?

Loisel 씨: 뭐요? 우리가 무도회장을 떠날 때 당신은 그것을 하고 있었소?

 

Mrs. Loisel: Yes, I surely did. Please go find it!

Loisel 부인: 그럼요, 분명히 하고 있었어요. 가서 그것 좀 찾아 줘요!

 

Mr. Loisel searches the streets.

Loisel 씨는 거리를 살펴본다.

 

He returns to the ball and then goes to the police.

그는 무도회장으로 되돌아가 본 다음 경찰서에도 간다.

 

When the necklace is not found, Mr. Loisel tells Matilda to lie to her friend.

목걸이가 발견되지 않자, Loisel 씨는 Matilda에게 그녀의 친구에게 거짓말을 하라고 말한다.

 

Matilda tells Mrs. Forestier she broke the necklace and would fix it before returning it.

Matilda는 Forestier 부인에게 자신이 목걸이를 망가뜨려서 그것을 돌려주기 전에 고쳐 주겠다고 말한다.

 

The couple needs time to find a similar one.

부부는 비슷한 것을 찾을 시간이 필요하다.

 

SCENE 5

장면 5

Mr. Loisel: (to the jeweler) Excuse me? May we look at that diamond necklace?

Loisel 씨: (보석상에게) 실례합니다. 저 다이아몬드 목걸이 좀 봐도 될까요?

 

Mrs. Loisel: (whispering) It is nearly the same. We must have it!

Loisel 부인: (속삭이며) 그것은 거의 똑같아요. 우리 그걸 사야 해요!

 

Mr. Loisel: How much is it?

Loisel 씨: 그건 얼마인가요?

 

Jeweler: 40,000 francs.

보석상: 4만 프랑입니다.

 

Mr. Loisel: How about 36,000?

Loisel 씨: 3만 6천 프랑은 안 될까요?

 

Mrs. Loisel: Please, we really need it.

Loisel 부인: 제발요, 저희한테는 그게 정말 필요해요.

 

Jeweler: Well, then... 36,000 it is.

보석상: 음, 그럼... 3만 6천 프랑으로 합시다.

 

They do not have 36,000 francs. It is a huge amount of money.

그들에게는 3만 6천 프랑이 없다. 그건 큰돈이다.

 

So they borrow it.

그래서 그들은 그 돈을 빌린다.

 

After buying the necklace for Mrs. Forestier, the couple spends ten years paying back the money.

부부는 Forestier 부인에게 돌려줄 목걸이를 구매한 후 그 돈을 갚는 데 십 년을 보낸다.

 

They move to a very small place.

그들은 아주 작은 곳으로 이사한다.

 

Mr. Loisel gets a second job.

Loisel 씨는 부업을 구한다.

 

Matilda washes clothes for others.

Matilda는 다른 사람들을 위해 빨래를 해 준다.

 

Ten years of hard work makes Matilda old and worn.

십 년 동안의 고된 일로 Matilda는 늙고 수척해진다.

 

After ten years, Matilda runs into Mrs. Forestier on the street.

십 년 후, Matilda는 거리에서 Forestier 부인과 우연히 마주친다.

 

SCENE 6

장면 6

Mrs. Loisel: Mrs. Forestier, good morning.

Loisel 부인: Forestier 부인, 좋은 아침이에요.

 

Mrs. Forestier: Do I know you?

Forestier 부인: 제가 아는 분이신가요?

 

Mrs. Loisel: Yes, it is me, Matilda.

Loisel 부인: 네, 저예요, Matilda예요.

 

Mrs. Forestier: Oh, I cannot believe it! You have changed so much.

Forestier 부인: 오, 믿을 수가 없네요! 당신 정말 많이 변했군요.

 

Mrs. Loisel: I have had some difficult times because of you.

Loisel 부인: 전 당신 때문에 힘든 시간을 좀 보냈어요.

 

Mrs. Forestier: Because of me? What do you mean?

Forestier 부인: 저 때문에요? 무슨 말이에요?

 

Mrs. Loisel: Do you remember the diamond necklace you lent me? Well, I lost it.

Loisel 부인: 당신이 제게 빌려준 다이아몬드 목걸이 기억하나요? 음, 전 그걸 잃어버렸어요.

 

Mrs. Forestier: But you returned it to me.

Forestier 부인: 하지만 그거 저한테 돌려줬잖아요.

 

Mrs. Loisel: No, I returned another one just like it. It took us ten years to pay for it.

Loisel 부인: 아니, 저는 당신 것과 거의 똑같은 다른 목걸이를 돌려줬어요. 우리는 그 비용을 치르느라 십 년이 걸렸어요.

 

Mrs. Forestier: You bought a diamond necklace to replace mine?

Forestier 부인: 제 것을 대체하려고 다이아몬드 목걸이를 샀다고요?

 

Mrs. Loisel: Yes.

Loisel 부인: 그래요.

 

Mrs. Forestier: Oh, my poor Matilda. Why didn't you come to me and tell me the truth? My diamond necklace was not real. It was worth only 500 francs!

Forestier 부인: 오, 불쌍한 Matilda. 왜 제게 와서 사실대로 말하지 않았어요? 제 다이아몬드 목걸이는 진짜가 아니었어요. 그건 단돈 오백 프랑짜리였어요!
