Minho’s Travel Journal: A Fine Land of Wonder

민호의 기행문: 놀랍고 아름다운 나라

My family and I just got back from our trip to Finland.

우리 가족과 나는 방금 핀란드 여행에서 돌아왔다. 

 

This trip was really special because it was for my parents' 20th wedding anniversary.

이 여행은 부모님의 결혼 20주년 기념을 위한 것이었기 때문에 정말 특별했다. 

 

My family had been planning and saving up for this trip for almost five years.

우리 가족은 거의 5년 동안 이 여행을 계획하고 저축해 왔다. 

 

Instead of a package tour, we planned the entire trip on our own. We had such a wonderful time.

패키지 여행 대신에, 우리는 여행 전체를 계획했다. 우리는 정말 멋진 시간을 보냈다. 

 

Helsinki

헬싱키

It took about ten hours to fly from Incheon to Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

인천에서 핀란드의 수도인 헬싱키까지 비행하는 데 약 10시간이 걸렸다. 

 

As soon as we arrived, we decided to take public transportation to the hotel in order to really experience Finland.

우리는 도착하자마자, 핀란드를 실제로 경험하기 위해 호텔까지 대중교통을 이용하기로 결정했다. 

 

But when we got off the bus downtown, we got hopelessly lost.

그러나 우리가 도심에서 버스에서 내렸을 때, 우리는 절망적으로 길을 잃었다. 

 

After several unsuccessful attempts to make sense of a map of Helsinki, we asked a Finnish man passing by for directions.

헬싱키의 지도를 이해하려는 여러 번의 시도에 실패한 후에, 우리는 지나가는 핀란드 사람에게 길을 물었다. 

 

He was really nice and walked us to the hotel.

그는 정말로 친절했고, 호텔까지 우리를 데려다 주었다.

 

His name was Niko and we were really impressed with how well he spoke English.

그의 이름은 Niko였는데 우리는 그가 영어를 얼마나 잘 하는지를 보고 감탄했다. 

 

He told us that most Finnish people spoke English like him.

그는 대부분의 핀란드 사람들이 그와 같이 영어를 한다고 우리에게 말했다. 

 

My sister and I vowed to study English hard when we got back to Korea.

누나와 나는 한국에 돌아오면 영어를 열심히 공부하겠다고 맹세했다. 

 

Right in front of the hotel was Market Square, which is the most famous market in Helsinki.

호텔 바로 앞에는 마켓 스퀘어(Market Square)가 있었는데, 그것은 헬싱키에서 가장 유명한 시장이다. 

 

It is made up of many little shops selling traditional market foods, handicrafts and souvenirs.

그것은 전통적인 시장 음식, 수공예품 및 기념품을 파는 많은 작은 상점들로 이루어져 있다. 

 

We took a brief look around the market and had some authentic Finnish street food.

우리는 시장을 간단히 둘러보고 핀란드 정통 길거리 음식을 먹었다. 

 

While walking around the city, we noticed that there were many signs for saunas.

도시를 걸어다니는 동안, 우리는 사우나를 나타내는 표지판이 많다는 것을 알아차렸다. 

 

My know-it-all sister, Minji asked, "Did you know that the word 'sauna' comes from Finland?"

만물박사인 누나 민지는 “‘사우나’라는 단어가 핀란드에서 왔다는 걸 알고 있었니?”라고 물었다. 

 

She went on to explain that there are over two million saunas in Finland. This is one hot country!

그녀는 계속해서 핀란드에는 2백만 개가 넘는 사우나가 있다고 설명했다. 핀란드는 하나의 뜨거운 나라다!

Seeing the Northern Lights has been at the top of our family's bucket list for a long time.

북극광을 보는 것은 오랫동안 우리 가족의 버킷리스트의 맨 위에 있었다. 

 

Finland is one of the best places on Earth to spot them.

핀란드는 지구상에서 북극광을 보기에 가장 좋은 장소 중 하나이다. 

 

Seeing them requires clear skies and a bit of luck.

그것들을 보기 위해서는 맑은 하늘과 약간의 운이 필요하다. 

 

Artificial light prevents viewing the Northern Lights in cities and villages.

인공 조명은 도시와 마을에서 북극광을 보는 것을 방해한다. 

 

In the hope of seeing them, we headed a little north to go farther into the Arctic wilderness.

북극광을 볼 수 있을 것이라는 희망을 가지고, 우리는 북극의 야생의 대자연으로 좀 더 가기 위해 더 북쪽으로 향했다. 

 

We found a place where we could sleep in an igloo, and if we were lucky, under the Northern Lights.

우리는 이글루에서 잠을 잘 수 있는 곳을 발견했는데, 운이 좋다면, 북극광 아래서 잠을 잘 수도 있었다. 

 

So, did we see them? Yes! Words cannot express how beautiful they were.

그래서, 우리가 그것들을 보았을까? 물론! 그것들이 얼마나 아름다운지 말로는 표현할 수 없다. 

 

It was well worth putting up with the cold weather.

추운 날씨를 참을 만한 가치가 있었다. 

 

Had we known the Northern Lights were this beautiful, we would have planned to stay here for a few more days.

우리가 북극광이 이렇게 아름답다는 것을 알았더라면, 우리는 며칠 더 여기에 머무를 계획을 세웠었을 것이다.

 

Rovaniemi

로바니에미

Do you know where Santa Claus lives? He lives right here in Rovaniemi.

산타클로스가 어디에 살고 있는지 아는가? 그는 바로 여기 Rovaniemi에서 살고 있다. 

 

Entering the village, we heard Christmas music. Every day was Christmas in the village.

마을에 들어가면서, 우리는 크리스마스 음악을 들었다. 그 마을에서는 매일이 크리스마스였다. 

 

In front of the Santa Claus Office, there was a huge snowman and a sign that read, Santa is here!

산타클로스 사무실 앞에는, 거대한 눈사람과 ‘산타가 여기 있습니다!’라고 쓰여 있는 간판이 있었다. 

 

We took photographs with Santa.

우리는 산타와 함께 사진을 찍었다. 

 

My father was wearing a red jacket and Santa joked, "I didn't know I had a brother in Korea."

아버지는 붉은색 재킷을 입고 계셨는데 산타는 “한국에 나의 형제가 있다는 것을 몰랐군요.”라고 농담을 했다. 

 

My father was really embarrassed and promised to lay off the midnight snacks and lose some weight.

아버지는 정말로 당황해서 한밤중에 먹는 간식을 끊고 살을 뺄 것을 맹세했다. 

 

We also went to see the Santa Claus Main Post Office.

우리는 또한 산타클로스 메인 우체국을 보러 갔다. 

 

Letters from children all over the world come here. Each letter gets a reply with a special Santa Claus postmark.

전 세계 어린이들의 편지가 이곳으로 온다. 각각의 편지는 특별한 산타클로스 소인이 찍힌 답장을 받게 된다. 

 

I remember how happy I was when I got my first reply from Santa.

나는 산타로부터 처음 답장을 받았을 때 얼마나 행복했는지 기억한다. 

 

Someday, I hope to bring my own children to this marvelous place.

언젠가, 나는 이 놀라운 곳으로 나의 아이들을 데려 올 수 있기를 바란다.

 

Sinettä

시네타

After saying goodbye to Santa, we headed to the Snow Hotel in Sinettä.

산타에게 작별 인사를 한 후, 우리는 Sinettä의 Snow Hotel로 향했다. 

 

The hotel was made of snow and ice, and looked like something out of a Disney movie.

그 호텔은 눈과 얼음으로 만들어졌으며, 디즈니 영화에서 나온 것처럼 보였다. 

 

The Snow Hotel is built from scratch every year in November. Even the beds in the rooms were made of ice!

Snow Hotel은 매년 11월에 맨 처음부터 지어진다. 객실의 침대조차도 얼음으로 만들어졌다! 

 

We sat on ice chairs and had dinner on an ice table.

우리는 얼음 의자에 앉아 얼음 테이블에서 저녁 식사를 했다. 

 

The chairs were covered with fur to keep us warm. The plates were also made of ice.

의자는 우리를 따뜻하게 해 주기 위해 모피로 덮여 있었다. 접시도 얼음으로 만들어졌다. 

 

When we finished our meal, the waiter came to clear the table and asked, "Are you finished?"

우리가 식사를 마쳤을 때, 웨이터가 식탁을 치우기 위해 와서 “식사를 마치셨나요?”라고 물었다. 

 

To this, my sister replied, "No, I'm Korean."

이에 대해, 누나는 “아니요, 저는 한국인이에요.”라고 대답했다. 

 

She thought the waiter had asked, "Are you Finnish?" We all had a good laugh.

그녀는 웨이터가 “핀란드 사람입니까?”라고 물어봤다고 생각했던 것이다. 우리 모두는 크게 웃었다. 

 

On the flight back to Korea, my family couldn't stop talking about our trip.

한국으로 돌아오는 비행기에서, 우리 가족은 여행에 관해 이야기하는 것을 멈출 수 없었다. 

 

One day, I hope to be a person who has a heart as warm as a Finnish sauna, a head as cool as the Snow Hotel, hands that give as much as Santa Claus and eyes that brighten others' lives like the Northern Lights.

언젠가, 나는 핀란드 사우나처럼 따뜻한 마음, Snow Hotel만큼 냉철한 머리, 산타클로스만큼 많이 주는 (너그러운) 손, 그리고 북극광처럼 다른 사람들의 삶을 밝게 해 주는 눈을 가진 사람이 되기를 바란다.
