The Curse of the Egyptian Ring

이집트 반지의 저주

Shirley Holmes was a tenth grader at Bakersville High.

Shirley Holmes는 Bakersville 고등학교 10학년이었다. 

 

She was the best crime solver in Bakersville, even though she was only a teenager.

그녀는 단지 십대였지만, Bakersville에서 가장 훌륭한 범죄 해결사였다.

 

She found everything from missing cats to stolen bicycles.

그녀는 행방불명된 고양이에서부터 도난당한 자전거까지 모든 것을 찾아냈다. 

 

The people of Bakersville didn't dare to do anything bad when Shirley was around.

One day, Shirley's father came home from work and said to Shirley, "Pack your bags, honey. We're going to the Big Apple."

Shirley's father worked at the Bakersville Museum, and his field of expertise was ancient Egyptian jewelry.

A museum in New York City had recently acquired an ancient Egyptian ring and needed the help of Shirley's father.

Shirley had never been to New York, so she excitedly packed her belongings.

When they arrived at the museum in New York, they were generously greeted by the director, Mr. Paddington.

They were introduced to other Egypt experts from around the world.

Mr. Ahmed was from Saudi Arabia, Mr. Drakos came from Greece, and Ms. Kapango was from Nigeria.

After some small talk, they were taken to the ring.

It was made of pure gold and had a large face with many ancient Egyptian symbols such as birds and stars carved on it.

As soon as Shirley's father saw the ring, he commented, "Absolutely gorgeous. This ring dates as far back as 600 BC."

Mr. Ahmed nodded. "Right. The design looks like it's from the 26th dynasty or later."

Mr. Drakos said, "I've never seen anything like it."

Drakos 씨가 말했다. “저는 이런 것을 결코 본 적이 없습니다.” 

 

Ms. Kapango whispered in a gentle voice.

Kapango 씨가 부드러운 목소리로 속삭였다. 

 

"A word of caution. It may be beautiful. But be careful of the curse of the Egyptian ring!

“경고의 말인데요. 이 반지가 아름다울지는 모르지만요. 하지만 이집트 반지의 저주를 조심하세요! 

 

The ring was only meant to be possessed by the royal family. If anyone outside the family took the ring, they would experience great misfortune."

그 반지는 오직 왕족만 소유하는 것으로 여겨졌어요. 왕족이 아닌 사람이 그 반지를 가져가면, 큰 불운을 겪을 것입니다.”

 

Shirley laughed. "That story was probably made up by the royal family."

Shirley는 웃었다. “그 이야기는 아마도 왕족이 꾸며냈을 거예요.”

 

Mr. Ahmed said, "The story may be more genuine than you think, young lady.

Ahmed 씨가 말했다. “그 이야기는 당신이 생각하는 것보다 더 진짜랍니다, 아가씨. 

 

Last year in Saudi Arabia, a man was seriously injured in a car accident on his way home after he bought a ring like this."

작년에 사우디아라비아에서 한 남자가 이런 반지를 산 후 집에 오는 길에 자동차 사고로 심각하게 다쳤어요.” 

 

Shirley replied in a shaky voice, "Perhaps, that was just... a coincidence."

Shirley는 떨리는 목소리로 답했다. “아마도, 그건 단지‧‧‧ 우연이었겠죠.” 

 

Mr. Paddington said, "Enough talk about curses. Shall we take a break?

Paddington 씨가 말했다. “저주 이야기는 그만합시다. 잠시 휴식 시간을 가질까요? 

 

There are some refreshments downstairs. I'll join you shortly."

아래층에 다과가 준비되어 있습니다. 저도 곧 여러분과 합류하겠습니다.” 

 

Shirley and her father were the first to leave the room.

Shirley와 그녀의 아버지는 가장 먼저 방을 떠났다. 

 

They were walking down the stairs when they heard a sharp scream. They rushed back into the room.

그들은 계단을 내려가는 도중에 날카로운 비명 소리를 들었다. 그들은 다시 방으로 서둘러 돌아갔다. 

 

Shirley rapidly scanned the room. Mr. Paddington was lying on the floor face down.

To his left, there was a broken vase and the floor was damp.

Mr. Drakos ran back into the room. Mr. Ahmed and Ms. Kapango followed shortly.

Shirley asked Mr. Paddington. "Are you okay?"

Fortunately, Mr. Paddington replied, "I have a bump on my head and it's a little sore but I'll be fine.

I was locking up the case when someone smashed me on the head with something from behind."

Mr. Ahmed said, "It must've been that vase. What happened to the ring?"

Mr. Paddington said, "Luckily, it's right here.

Paddington 씨가 말했다. “다행히, 반지는 바로 여기에 있어요. 

 

The attacker tried to tear it from my hands, but I held onto it as tightly as I could. The thief's fingerprints should be on it."

저를 공격한 사람은 제 손에서 그것을 빼내려고 했지만, 저는 가능한 한 그것을 꽉 잡았어요. 도둑의 지문이 반지에 묻어 있을 거예요.”

 

Ms. Kapango remarked, "It's the curse. I warned you! I'm getting out of here!"

Mr. Drakos picked up the phone on the wall.

He shouted, "Everybody freeze! I'm calling 112."

He spoke into the phone, "Send the police immediately. A crime has been committed.“

그는 전화기에 대고 말했다. “당장 경찰을 보내 주십시오. 범죄가 일어났습니다.”

 

It was only a matter of minutes before there was a knock at the door.

겨우 몇 분 만에 문을 두드리는 소리가 났다. 

 

"I am Detective Marcel. I was in the neighborhood and came as soon as I could."

“저는 Marcel 형사입니다. 저는 이 근방에 있었고 가능한 한 빨리 왔습니다.” 

 

Mr. Paddington explained the situation to Detective Marcel.

Paddington 씨가 Marcel 형사에게 상황을 설명했다. 

 

Marcel asked the others, "Where were you when you heard Mr. Paddington scream?"

Marcel은 다른 사람들에게 물었다. “Paddington 씨가 비명을 지르는 것을 들었을 때 여러분은 어디에 있었습니까?” 

 

Shirley and Mr. Holmes replied, "We were going down the stairs."

Marcel wondered, "The elevator was very close by, yet you decided to walk down."

Mr. Holmes said, "Yes. I wanted a little exercise."

Mr. Ahmed said, "I was waiting for the elevator. I came back as soon as I heard the scream."

Ahmed 씨가 말했다. “저는 엘리베이터를 기다리고 있었어요. 저는 비명 소리를 듣자마자 돌아왔습니다.” 

 

Marcel asked, "You're wearing a watch on your right hand. Are you left-handed?"

Marcel이 물었다. “당신은 오른손에 시계를 차고 있군요. 왼손잡이십니까?” 

 

Mr. Ahmed replied, "Yes. What does that prove?"

Ahmed 씨가 대답했다. “네. 그래서 어떻다는 거죠?” 

 

Marcel shook his head. "Nothing yet.“

Marcel은 고개를 가로저었다. “아직은 아무것도 아닙니다.”

 

Ms. Kapango said, "I went to the ladies' room to wash my hands before getting some refreshments."

Kapango 씨가 말했다. “저는 다과를 먹기 전에 손을 씻으러 여자 화장실에 갔어요.” 

 

Marcel looked at her hands. "You still have water on your hands."

Marcel은 그녀의 손을 바라보았다. “손에 아직 물이 묻어 있군요.” 

 

Ms. Kapango said, "I didn't have a chance to dry them."

Kapango 씨가 말했다. “손을 말릴 틈이 없었어요.” 

 

Mr. Drakos said, "I also went to the men's room."

Drakos 씨가 말했다. “저 역시 남자 화장실에 갔습니다.” 

 

Marcel noted, "But your hands are dry."

Marcel이 말했다. “하지만 당신의 손은 말라 있는데요.” 

 

Mr. Drakos complained, "Are you accusing me? I didn't even touch the water. I ran back as soon as I heard Mr. Paddington."

Drakos 씨가 불평했다. “저를 의심하시는 겁니까? 저는 물에 손을 대지도 못했어요. 저는 Paddington 씨의 소리를 듣자마자 뛰어 돌아왔습니다.” 

 

Ms. Kapango protested, "Cease this nonsense! I assure you there is no thief. It's the curse!"

Kapango 씨가 항변했다. “이 바보 같은 짓을 중단해요! 내가 장담하건대 여기에 도둑은 없어요. 이건 저주예요!” 

 

Detective Marcel said, "Keep calm, everyone. Once I get the vase and the ring to the police lab for fingerprints, we will get to the bottom of this.

Marcel 형사는 말했다. “여러분, 침착하세요. 일단 제가 지문을 찾기 위해 꽃병과 반지를 경찰 실험실로 가져가면, 우리는 이 일의 진상을 규명할 수 있을 것입니다. 

 

Until the results come in, everyone is a suspect, so don't think about leaving town."

결과가 나올 때까지는 모두가 용의자이므로, 마을을 떠날 생각은 하지 마십시오.” 

 

Shirley confidently declared, "There's no need for further investigation. I know who the thief is!

Shirley는 확신을 갖고 선언했다. “더 이상 조사는 필요 없어요. 저는 누가 도둑인지 알아요! 

 

Or should I say "thieves"? I've texted the real police at 911 and they're coming to take you to jail."

아니면 ‘도둑들‘이라고 해야 하나요? 제가 911로 진짜 경찰에게 문자를 보내서 경찰이 지금 당신들을 감옥에 보내러 오고 있어요.” 

 

Who are the thieves and how did Shirley know?
