The Deep Sea

심해 

Deep below the ocean’s surface is a mysterious world taking up 95% of the earth’s living space.

바다 표면(해수면) 아래 깊은 곳에 지구 거주 공간의 95퍼센트를 차지하는 신비한 세계가 있다. 

 

The pressure at the deepest part of the sea (about 10,000 meters below sea level) is about 1,000 times as great as that on the ocean’s surface, which is why the deep sea remains largely unexplored.

가장 깊은 심해(해수면 밑 약 1만 미터 아래)의 압력은 바다 표면 압력의 1,000배인데, 그렇기 때문에 심해가 대부분 탐험되지 못한 상태로 남아 있는 것이다. 

 

However, with the development of technologies such as submarines, scientists can now explore this vast area.

하지만 잠수함과 같은 기술의 발전과 함께, 과학자들은 이제 이 광활한 지역을 탐험할 수 있다. 

 

It’s hard to imagine a more forbidding place than the icy cold, dark, and crushing environment of the deep ocean.

심해의 얼어붙을 듯 춥고 어둡고 다 으스러뜨릴 것 같은 환경보다 더한 접근 금지구역을 상상하기는 어렵다. 

 

It’s even harder to imagine anything living there.

그곳에 생명체가 살 것이라고 상상하기는 더 어렵다. 

 

But while exploring the deepest points in the sea, researchers have discovered that thousands of fascinating animals have adapted to life in this challenging environment.

하지만 심해 가장 깊은 곳을 탐사하던 중 연구자들은 수천 종의 매력적인 생물들이 이렇게 힘든 환경 속에서 살아가는 것에 적응했음을 발견했다. 

 

Taking on many weird forms, animals living in the deep sea look quite alien.

여러 기괴한 형태를 띠고 있어서 심해에 사는 동물들은 매우 외계생물체처럼 보인다. 

 

Some have huge eyes that capture the little existing light.

어떤 것들은 거의 존재하지 않는 빛을 포착하는 거대한 눈을 가지고 있다. 

 

Others seem to be all mouth.

어떤 것들은 몸이 다 입인 것 같기도 하다. 

 

Their jaws—often filled with sharp teeth—are always open, ready to capture whatever food falls from above.

대개 날카로운 이빨로 가득한 그들의 턱은 항상 벌려져 있어서 위에서 떨어지는 어떤 먹이라도 포획할 준비가 되어 있다. 

 

Other deep sea animals have transparent bodies that can be seen through, which enables them to blend into the water.

다른 심해 생물들은 몸통이 훤히 보이게 투명한데 이런 투명성이 그들을 물에 섞여 있게(보이지 않게) 해 준다. 

 

With a variety of advanced technologies, it won’t be long before scientists succeed in exploring this vast area that currently remains as mysterious as deep space.

여러 가지 발전된 기술을 사용하여 조만간 과학자들은 현재는 심연의 우주처럼 신비로운 곳으로 남아있는 방대한 지역들을 탐사하는 데 성공할 수 있을 것이다.
