The Rescue of the 33 Miners

33명의 광부 구조

On the morning of August 5, 2010 in Chile, thirty-three miners were working almost 760 meters below the surface.

2010년 8월 5일 아침, 칠레에서 33명의 광부들이 지면에서 약 760미터 내려간 지하에서 작업을 하고 있었다. 

 

Some were loading ore into a mining vehicle, with the others resting in the Refuge, a room carved out of rock some 700 meters down.

일부는 광석을 탄광 차량에 싣고 있었고, 또 다른 나머지 광부들은 700미터 지하에 암반을 깎아 만든 공간인 Refuge(대피소)에서 쉬고 있었다. 

 

Suddenly, there was a massive explosion that trapped all thirty-three miners in the Refuge.

갑자기 엄청난 폭발이 있었고, 이 33명의 광부들은 Refuge에 갇히게 되었다. 

 

Shocked, some tried to find a way back to the surface, but with rocks blocking their way, their efforts were hopeless.

놀라서 일부는 지상으로 돌아가는 길을 찾으려고 노력했으나 바위들이 길을 막아버려서 그들의 노력은 물거품이 되었다. 

 

How was it that the miners could survive underground?

이 광부들이 어떻게 지하에서 살아남을 수 있었을까? 

 

They did whatever they could do to stay calm, with strong leadership holding them together and the belief that they could survive this difficulty with their strong will.

그들은 할 수 있는 한 최대로 차분하게 대처했고 그들을 하나로 묶어주는 강한 리더십이 있었으며, 강한 의지로 이 어려움을 이겨낼 수 있으리라는 믿음이 있었다. 

 

They ate their daily “meal”—one spoon of canned fish mixed with water and two cookies for each man.

그들은 하루의 “식사"인 1인당 물에 섞은 한 숟가락의 통조림 생선, 두 개의 쿠키를 먹었다. 

 

To keep themselves from feeling hopeless, they talked, joked, and played checkers crafted from pieces of thick paper.

절망을 느끼지 않기 위해 그들은 얘기하고, 농담을 하고 두꺼운 종이로 만든 장기를 두었다. 

 

With the days passing by, negative thoughts grew among some of the miners.

여러 날이 지나면서 일부 광부들의 마음에 부정적인 생각이 생겨났다. 

 

On the sixteenth day, the men shared their last piece of fruit.

16일째 되던 날, 그들은 그들의 마지막 과일 조각을 나눠 먹었다. 

 

Several men started writing goodbye letters, in the hopes that a rescuer might one day find their final messages.

일부 광부들은 언젠가 구조대가 그들의 마지막 메시지를 찾을 수 있을지도 모른다는 희망을 가지고 작별 편지를 쓰기 시작했다. 

 

On the seventeenth day, however, the men heard a digging sound getting closer, and they held on to the hope of being rescued.

하지만, 17일 째 되던 날, 그들은 땅을 파는 소리가 가까워져 오는 것을 들었고 그들은 구조되리라는 희망의 끈을 놓지 않았다. 

 

Finally, on October 13, after sixty-nine frightful days, all thirty-three of the buried miners were brought to the surface safely.

결국 10월 13일, 69일의 무서운 날들이 지나고, 지하에 갇혀있던 33명 광부들 모두가 안전하게 지상으로 나올 수 있었다. 

 

They survived their suffering with the help of their strong belief in the old saying: When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

그들은 오래된 속담인 “나아가는 게 힘들어져도 (상황이 어려워져도), 강한 자는 앞으로 나간다(포기하지 않는다)."는 말에 대한 강한 믿음을 가지고 그 어려움을 이겨냈다.
