Who Brings the Gifts?

누가 선물을 가져다주는가?

 

When the winter holidays come, many children wait for presents.

겨울 방학이 오면 많은 어린이들이 선물을 기다린다.

 

It makes them excited.

그건 그들을 신나게 한다.

 

But are they all waiting for Santa Claus?

하지만 그들 모두가 산타클로스를 기다리고 있을까?

 

Actually, there are many other gift givers around the world.

사실, 세계에는 여러 다른 선물을 가져다주는 존재가 있다.

 

Let's learn about them!

그들에 대해 알아보자!

 

In Italy, children hear stories about La Befana.

이탈리아에서 어린이들은 라 베파나에 대한 이야기를 듣는다.

 

She wears old clothes and flies on a broomstick.

그녀는 낡은 옷을 입고 빗자루를 타고 날아다닌다.

 

She comes to children's houses on the night of January 5th.

그녀는 1월 5일 밤에 어린이들의 집에 온다.

 

Like Santa Claus, La Befana goes down chimneys.

산타클로스처럼, 라 베파나는 굴뚝으로 내려온다.

 

She gives good children toys, candies, and fruit.

그녀는 착한 아이들에게 장난감, 사탕, 그리고 과일을 준다.

 

But bad children get garlic, onions, and coal.

그러나 나쁜 아이들은 마늘, 양파, 그리고 석탄을 받는다.

 

On the same night in Puerto Rico, children put a box of grass under their beds and go to sleep.

같은 날 밤 푸에르토리코에서는 아이들이 그들의 침대 밑에 풀 상자를 놓고서 잠을 잔다.

 

During the night, the Three Kings visit them on camels.

그날 밤 동안, 세 명의 왕이 낙타를 타고 그들을 방문한다.

 

The hungry camels eat the grass and feel full.

배고픈 낙타들은 풀을 먹고 배가 부르다고 느낀다.

 

That makes the kings happy.

그것은 왕들을 행복하게 한다.

 

They think, "How kind these children are!"

그들은 “이 아이들은 참 친절하구나!”라고 생각한다.

 

Then the kings put their gifts in the boxes for the children.

그리고 왕들은 아이들을 위해 그 상자에 그들의 선물을 넣는다.

 

For the children of Finland, there is Joulupukki.

핀란드의 아이들을 위해서는 요울루푸키가 있다.

 

His name means "Christmas Goat."

그의 이름은 “크리스마스 염소”를 뜻한다.

 

On Christmas Eve, Joulupukki goes to every house and knocks on the front door.

크리스마스 이브에 요울루푸키는 모든 집에 가서 앞문을 두드린다.

 

Each family welcomes him into their home.

각 가정은 그를 그들의 집으로 맞이한다.

 

He asks, "Are there any nice children here?"

그는 “여기 착한 아이들이 있나요?”라고 묻는다.

 

Then he gives them presents.

그리고 그는 그들에게 선물을 준다.

 

On New Year's Eve, people in Japan wait for Hoteiosho, a god of good luck.

새해 전날에 일본 사람들은 행운의 신, 호테이오쇼를 기다린다.

 

Like Santa Claus, he carries a big bag of gifts.

산타클로스처럼, 그는 큰 선물 가방을 들고 다닌다.

 

To find nice children, he uses the eyes on the back of his head. What a surprise!

착한 아이들을 찾기 위해서 그는 그의 뒤통수에 있는 눈을 사용한다. 참 놀랍다!
