하늘에서 내려오는 소방대원

Last week, lightning struck a tree and started a fire in a mountain forest in California.

지난주, 나무에 번개가 쳐서 캘리포니아에 있는 산림에 화재가 시작되었다.

 

It spread quickly, and firefighters had to get to it fast.

불은 빠르게 번졌고, 소방대원들은 그곳에 빨리 도착해야 했다.

 

However, there were no roads in the forest, so fire trucks could not get to the fire!

하지만, 숲에는 도로가 없어서, 소방차들이 화재 현장에 다다를 수 없었다!

 

Suddenly, an airplane appeared, and a group of firefighters started jumping out of it.

갑자기 비행기 한 대가 나타났고, 한 무리의 소방대원들이 비행기에서 뛰어내리기 시작했다.

 

They were smokejumpers.

그들은 삼림 소방대원들이었다.

 

Smokejumpers jump into a forest with only a few tools, and they carry only drinking water.

삼림 소방대원들은 도구 몇 개만 가지고 숲으로 뛰어내리고, 마시는 물만 들고 다닌다.

 

Then, how do they put out a fire in the forest?

그러면, 그들은 숲에서 어떻게 화재를 진화하는가?

 

When they are on the ground, they cut down trees and move them away.

They also turn the soil over and over to make a fire line.

The work takes a long time, so they often have to stay in the forest for a few days.

"I know my job is dangerous, but I love it," says Thomas McCarthy, a smokejumper from California.

He adds, "I protect forests, wild animals, and even human lives. I'm really proud of my job!"
