The Secret is Air!

비밀은 공기다!

Sumin’s school is holding a science fair.

수민이네 학교는 과학 박람회를 열고 있다.

 

There are so many interesting booths.

그곳에는 재미있는 전시관이 많이 있다.

 

The “Science of Air” booth catches Sumin’s eye.

‘공기의 과학’이라는 전시관이 수민이의 눈길을 끈다.

 

Hajun: Welcome to the “Science of Air” booth.

하준: ‘공기의 과학’ 전시관에 온 것을 환영해요.

 

Let’s do an interesting experiment.

재미있는 실험을 해봐요.

 

Here, I have two empty cans.

여기 빈 캔 두 개가 있어요.

 

I’m going to crush the red can.

제가 빨간 캔을 찌그러뜨릴 겁니다.

 

Now, the red one is flat and the blue one isn’t.

이제 빨간 캔은 납작하고 파란 캔은 그렇지 않아요.

 

I will put them in the water tank.

두 캔을 수조에 넣을 겁니다.

 

Which one will float? Why?

어느 캔이 물에 뜰까요? 왜 그럴까요?

 

Sumin: Well, both will float because they are very light.

수민: 음, 둘 다 아주 가벼우니까 둘 다 뜰 것 같아요.

 

Hajun: Let’s see. Sumin: Only the blue one floats! Why?

하준: 한 번 보죠. 수민: 파란 캔만 떠요! 왜 그렇죠?

 

Hajun: Because of air!

하준: 공기 때문이에요!

 

The blue can has enough space for air.

파란 캔에는 공기가 있을 충분한 공간이 있죠.

 

Air is lighter than water.

공기는 물보다 가볍고요.

 

So, the blue can floats in the water.

그래서 파란 캔이 물에 뜨는 겁니다.

 

Sumin: The red can doesn’t have much space for air.

수민: 빨간 캔에는 공기가 들어갈 많은 공간이 없어요.

 

So it can’t float.

그래서 물에 뜰 수 없군요.

 

Hajun: You’re right.

하준: 맞아요.

 

Sumin: The secret is air!

수민: 비밀은 공기군요!

 

Hajun: Yes. It works for a large ship, too.

하준: 그렇죠. 이것은 큰 배에도 똑같이 작용해요.

 

Sumin: Really? Where’s the air in a ship?

수민: 정말요? 배 어디에 공기가 있어요?

 

Hajun: A ship has a large empty space in the bottom.

하준: 배는 바닥에 커다란 빈 공간이 있어요.

 

Sumin: In the bottom?

수민: 바닥에요?

 

Hajun: Yes. There is air in that space.

하준: 그래요. 그 공간에 공기가 있죠.

 

Because of the air, the density of the ship decreases.

그 공기 때문에 배의 밀도가 낮아지고요.

 

Sumin: Aha! So a large ship can float.

수민: 아하! 그래서 커다란 배도 뜰 수 있군요.

 

Air is so powerful!

공기는 정말 강력하네요!
