When you go to an art museum, how much time do you spend looking at each painting?

미술관에 갈 때 여러분은 각각의 그림을 보는 데 얼마나 많은 시간을 보내나요?

 

Many visitors glance at one painting for only a few seconds before they move on.

많은 방문객들은 이동하기 전에 그림 한 점을 몇 초간만 힐끗 봅니다.

 

But you might miss the important details of paintings since it is hard to notice them right away.

하지만 그림의 중요한 세부 사항들을 즉시 알아채는 것은 어렵기 때문에 여러분들은 그것들을 놓칠 수 있습니다.

 

Today, we'll look at two paintings closely and I'll help you see interesting details.

오늘 우리는 두 점의 그림을 자세히 살펴볼 것이고, 여러분이 흥미로운 세부 사항들을 볼 수 있도록 제가 도와드리겠습니다.

 

Look at this painting first.

The seaside landscape is so peaceful and beautiful, isn't it?

바닷가 풍경이 매우 평화롭고 아름답죠, 그렇지 않나요?

 

The title of this painting is Landscape with the Fall of Icarus.

이 그림의 제목은 「추락하는 이카로스가 있는 풍경」입니다.

 

So, can you see where Icarus is?

Do you see two legs that are sticking out of the water near the ship?

배 근처에 물 밖으로 나와 있는 두 다리가 보이죠?

 

This is Icarus in the famous myth in Greece.

이것이 그리스의 유명한 신화에 나오는 이카로스입니다.

 

In the myth, Icarus' father made wings for him with feathers and wax and told him to stay away from the sun.

신화에서 이카로스의 아버지는 그를 위해 깃털과 밀랍으로 날개를 만들어 주었고 그에게 태양을 가까이 하지 말라고 말했습니다.

 

However, Icarus didn't listen.

하지만 이카로스는 듣지 않았습니다.

 

He flew too close to the sun.

그는 태양에 너무 가깝게 날았습니다.

 

So, the wax melted and he fell into the water.

그래서 밀랍이 녹았고 그는 물에 빠졌습니다.

 

Now, look at the entire painting again.

Despite the tragedy of Icarus, people are going on with their everyday activities.
