My Tech-Free Trip Story

나의 ‘첨단 과학 기술 없는’ 여행 이야기

 

Last summer, my father suggested a surprising event: a family trip without smartphones!

지난여름, 아빠가 깜짝 놀랄 만한 이벤트로 스마트폰 없는 가족 여행을 제안하셨다!

 

He said, "I hate to see you sitting together and only looking at your smartphones."

아빠는 “나는 우리 가족이 함께 앉아서 각자의 스마트폰만 보고 있는 걸 보는 게 참 싫구나.”라고 말씀하셨다.

 

My sister and I explained the need for smartphones, but he kept saying that we could not fully enjoy the trip with them.

여동생과 내가 스마트폰이 필요하다고 설명했지만, 아빠는 스마트폰이 있으면 여행을 충분히 즐길 수 없을 거라고 계속해서 말씀하셨다.

 

So we started a technology-free trip to a new city, Barcelona, Spain.

그래서 우리는 새로운 도시인 스페인의 바르셀로나로 ‘첨단 과학 기술 없는’ 여행을 시작했다.

 

Our first day was terrible.

우리의 첫째 날은 엉망이었다.

 

On the way to our guesthouse around Plaza Reial, we got lost in downtown Barcelona.

레이알 광장 주변에 있는 여행자 숙소로 가는 길에 우리는 바르셀로나 시내에서 길을 잃었다.

 

Dad was busy looking at the map and asking for directions with a few Spanish words he got from a tour guidebook.

아빠는 지도를 보며 여행 안내 책자에서 배운 스페인어 몇 마디로 길을 묻느라 분주하셨다.

 

Even though our guesthouse was right next to the Plaza, it took us about two hours to get there.

우리의 숙소가 광장 바로 옆에 있었음에도 불구하고, 우리가 그곳에 도착하는 데는 거의 두 시간이 걸렸다.

 

We were so tired that we could not go out for dinner.

우리는 너무 피곤해서 저녁을 먹으러 나갈 수가 없었다.

 

I went to bed but couldn't fall asleep because I was worried about what would happen the next day.

나는 잠자리에 들었지만 내일 무슨 일이 일어날지 걱정이 되어서 잠들 수가 없었다.

 

After looking around Gaudi's Park Guell, we decided to have seafood fried rice for lunch.

가우디가 지은 구엘 공원을 둘러본 후, 우리는 점심으로 해산물 볶음밥을 먹기로 했다.

 

However, we didn't know which restaurant to go to.

그러나 우리는 어떤 식당으로 가야 할지 몰랐다.

 

We needed help, so Mom went up to an elderly lady and tried to ask for directions to a popular seafood restaurant.

우리는 도움이 필요했고, 엄마가 한 노부인에게 가서 인기 있는 해산물 식당으로 가는 길을 물어보려 애쓰셨다.

 

Luckily, she seemed to understand Mom's few Spanish words.

운이 좋게도 그녀는 몇 마디 안 되는 엄마의 스페인어를 이해하는 듯했다.

 

She took us to a small local restaurant nearby.

그녀는 우리를 근처에 있는 작은 현지 식당으로 데려다 주었다.

 

The seafood fried rice was amazing.

그 해산물 볶음밥은 놀랍도록 맛있었다.

 

I really wanted to take pictures of the food and post them on my blog.

나는 음식 사진을 찍어 그것을 내 블로그에 올리고 싶은 마음이 정말 간절했다.

 

But without my phone, I just decided to enjoy the moment.

그러나 스마트폰이 없었기 때문에 나는 그냥 그 순간을 즐기기로 했다.

 

During the remaining days, we relied more and more on the locals.

남아 있는 날들 동안, 우리는 점점 더 현지 사람들에게 의존하게 되었다.

 

We were able to meet and talk with various people on the streets, in the bakeries, and in the parks.

우리는 거리에서, 빵집에서, 공원에서 다양한 사람들을 만나 이야기할 수 있었다.

 

They were always kind enough to show us different sides of Barcelona with a smile.

그들은 항상 웃으면서 너무나 친절히도 바르셀로나의 다양한 면을 우리에게 보여 주었다.

 

Also, our family talked a lot with each other.

또한 우리 가족은 서로 많은 대화를 나누었다.

 

We spent much of our time together on the Spanish train, on the bus, and at the restaurants.

우리는 스페인식 기차에서, 버스에서, 그리고 식당에서 많은 시간을 함께 보냈다.

 

Our technology-free trip was a new and different experience.

우리의 ‘첨단 과학 기술 없는’ 여행은 새롭고 색다른 경험이었다.

 

Before the trip, I was so dependent on my smartphone that I couldn't do anything without it.

여행 전에 나는 내 스마트폰에 너무 의존해서 그것 없이는 아무것도 할 수 없었다.

 

But now I see that I can enjoy the moment without it.

하지만 지금은 내가 스마트폰 없이도 그 순간을 즐길 수 있음을 알고 있다.

 

From the experience, I have learned the importance of a balanced use of the smartphone.

그 경험을 통해, 나는 스마트폰을 균형 있게 사용하는 것이 중요함을 배우게 되었다.

 

So, next time, would I travel without a smartphone?

그러면, 다음번에 나는 스마트폰 없이 여행을 하게 될까?

 

Probably not.

아마도 그렇지는 않을 것이다.

 

But I will try to use it more wisely.

하지만 나는 그것을 좀 더 현명하게 사용하기 위해 노력할 것이다.
