돌멩이

One day, Maibon was driving down the road on his horse and cart when he saw an old man.

어느 날, Maibon이 한 노인을 보았을 때 그는 마차를 타고 길을 가고 있는 중이었다.

 

The old man looked very sick.

그 노인은 매우 아파 보였다.

 

Maibon began to worry about growing old.

Maibon은 늙어 가는 것이 걱정되기 시작했다.

 

Later that day, he saw a dwarf, Doli, in the field.

그날 오후, 그는 들판에서 Doli라는 난쟁이를 보았다.

 

He was trying to get his leg out from under a log.

그는 통나무 아래에 깔린 그의 다리를 빼내려 하고 있었다.

 

Maibon pulled the log away and freed the dwarf.

Maibon은 통나무를 잡아당겨서 난쟁이를 풀어주었다.

 

"You'll have your reward. What do you want?"

“너는 보상을 받게 될 거야. 원하는 게 뭐니?”

 

"I've heard that you have magic stones that can keep a man young. I want one."

 “나는 네가 사람의 젊음을 유지해 주는 마법의 돌들을 가지고 있다고 들었어. 나는 그것을 원해.”

 

"Oh, you humans have it all wrong.

“오, 너희 인간들은 잘못 알고 있어.

 

Those stones don't make you young again.

그 돌들은 너희들이 다시 젊어지게 해 주지 않아.

 

They only keep you from getting older."

단지 더 늙지 않게 막아 줄 뿐이라고.”

 

"Just as good!"

“그것대로 좋아!”

 

Doli tried to explain the problem with the stones, but Maibon didn't listen.

Doli는 그 돌에 관한 문제를 설명하려고 했지만, Maibon은 듣지 않았다.

 

So Doli handed him a magic stone and went away

그래서 Doli는 그에게 마법의 돌을 건네고는 가 버렸다.

 

After a few days, Maibon saw that his beard didn't grow at all.

며칠이 지나서, Maibon은 그의 수염이 전혀 자라지 않았음을 알았다.

 

He became happy, but his wife, Modrona, got upset.

그는 행복해졌지만, 그의 아내 Modrona는 화가 났다.

 

"The eggs don't change into chickens!"

“달걀이 닭이 되지 않아요!”

 

"Oh, the season's slow, that's all."

“아, 시기가 더딘 거예요. 그뿐이에요.”

 

But she was not happy.

하지만 그녀는 탐탁해하지 않았다.

 

"The cow doesn't give birth!"

“소가 새끼를 낳지 않아요!”

 

Maibon, then, told her about the stone, and she got very angry and told him to throw it away.

그때 Maibon은 그 돌에 대해 그녀에게 이야기를 했고 그녀는 매우 화를 내며 그에게 그것을 버리라고 말했다.

 

He didn't want to, but he listened to his wife and threw the stone out the window.

그는 원하지 않았지만, 아내의 말을 듣고 창밖으로 돌을 던졌다.

 

However, the next morning, he found the stone sitting by the window!

그러나 다음날 아침 그는 창가에 그 돌이 있는 것을 발견했다!

 

Maibon was worried about the animals, but he was glad that he was still young.

Maibon은 동물들이 걱정되긴 했지만, 자신이 여전히 젊어서 기뻤다.

 

Now Maibon's baby was having trouble.

이제 Maibon의 아기에게 문제가 생겼다.

 

No tooth was seen in his mouth.

아기의 입에서 이가 보이지 않았다.

 

His wife told him to throw away the stone and this time, Maibon put the stone under the ground.

그의 아내는 그에게 그 돌을 버리라고 말했고 Maibon은 이번엔 그 돌을 땅속에 묻었다.

 

But, the next day, the stone came back!

그런데 그 다음날 그 돌은 다시 돌아왔다!

 

Time went by and nothing grew or changed.

시간이 흘렀고 어떤 것도 자라거나 변하지 않았다.

 

Maibon began to worry.

Maibon은 걱정이 되기 시작했다.

 

"There's nothing to look forward to, nothing to show for my work."

“기대할 것도, 내 일의 결과를 보여 줄 것도 아무것도 없어.”

 

Maibon tried to destroy the stone, but it kept coming back.

Maibon은 그 돌을 없애려고 노력했지만 돌은 계속 되돌아왔다.

 

Maibon decided to throw away the stone far from his house.

Maibon은 그 돌을 그의 집에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에 버리기로 결심했다.

 

On his way to the field, he saw the dwarf.

그는 들판으로 가는 길에 난쟁이를 보았다.

 

Maibon got angry with him.

Maibon은 그에게 화를 냈다.

 

"Why didn't you warn me about the stone?"

“너는 왜 내게 그 돌에 대해 경고하지 않았어?”

 

"I tried to, but you wouldn't listen."

“나는 하려고 했지만, 너는 들으려 하지 않았어.”

 

Doli explained that Maibon couldn't get rid of the stone unless he really wanted to.

Doli는 Maibon이 진심으로 원하지 않는 한 그 돌을 없앨 수 없다고 설명했다.

 

"I want no more of it. Whatever may happen, let it happen!"

“나는 그것을 더 이상 원하지 않아. 무슨 일이 있어도 일어나게 놔둬!”

 

Doli told him to throw the stone onto the ground and go back home.

Doli는 그에게 그 돌을 땅에 던지고 집으로 돌아가라고 말했다.

 

Maibon did as Doli said.

Maibon은 Doli가 말한 대로 했다.

 

When he arrived home, Modrona told him the good news―the eggs changed into chickens and the cow bore her baby.

그가 집에 도착했을 때, Modrona는 그에게 달걀이 닭이 되고 소가 새끼를 낳았다는 좋은 소식을 말해 주었다.

 

And Maibon laughed with delight when he saw the first tooth in his baby's mouth.

그리고 Maibon은 아기의 입에 첫 이가 난 것을 보고 기뻐서 웃었다.

 

Maibon, Modrona and their children and grandchildren lived for many years.

Maibon과 Modrona, 그리고 그들의 자녀들과 손주들은 오랫동안 살았다.

 

Maibon was proud of his white hair and long beard

Maibon은 그의 흰 머리와 긴 수염을 자랑스러워했다.
