Love is All You Need

당신에게 필요한 건 사랑이 전부다

On October 16th, 2010, Eunchong and his dad participated in their first triathlon.

2010년 10월 16일, 은총이와 그의 아빠는 그들의 첫 철인 레이스에 참가했다.

 

It was held in Misari, Hanam.

그것은 하남의 미사리에서 열렸다.

 

They swam 1.5 km, cycled 40 km, and then ran 10 km.

그들은 1.5km를 수영하고, 40km 사이클을 타고, 그런 다음 10km를 뛰었다.

 

This challenge was especially difficult for Eunchong’s dad because he had to push or pull Eunchong during the race.

이 도전은 은총이 아빠에게 특히 어려웠는데 경주 동안 은총이를 밀거나 끌어야 했기 때문이다.

 

Eunchong couldn’t talk or walk because he was born with six different diseases.

His skin was dark red and his brain was becoming hard.

The doctor said he would not live for long.

의사는 은총이가 오래 살지 못할 거라 했다.

 

But Eunchong not only is still alive but also got first place in his first triathlon. 

하지만 은총이는 여전히 살아 있을 뿐만 아니라 그의 첫 철인 레이스에서 1등을 했다.

 

Dear Eunchong,

I thank you not only for being my son but also for teaching me an important life lesson.

은총이에게,

나는 네가 내 아들이어서뿐만 아니라 나에게 중요한 인생의 교훈을 가르쳐 주어서 고맙구나.

 

When you were a baby, people avoided you because of your skin color.

네가 아기였을 때, 사람들이 너의 피부색 때문에 너를 피했단다.

 

I felt sad and wanted to hide you from them.

나는 슬펐고 너를 그들로부터 숨기고 싶었어.

 

Your mom hoped that you would be born with no disabilities.

네 엄마는 네가 장애 없이 태어나기를 바랐지.

 

She blamed herself for your sickness.

너의 아픔이 자신 때문이라고 자책도 했어.

 

But you always smiled at us and held our hands.

하지만 너는 우리를 향해 항상 웃어 주었고, 우리의 손을 잡아 주었어.

 

You gave us courage as well as hope.

너는 우리에게 희망뿐만 아니라 용기도 주었지.

 

So, I promised myself that I would face the world and show you the bright side of things.

그래서 나는 세상을 직면하고 너에게 세상의 밝은 면을 보여 주겠다고 자신에게 약속했어.

 

Since then we have begun our journey. 

그때부터 우리는 우리의 여정을 시작했지.

 

Do you remember our first triathlon?

우리의 첫 철인 레이스를 기억하니?

 

When we began to swim, the other participants made way for us and let us go first.

우리가 수영을 시작했을 때, 다른 참가자들이 우리가 먼저 가도록 길을 만들어 줬어.

 

I was very touched and thankful.

나는 정말 감동하였고 감사했단다.

 

Some participants even cried when we passed them by.

몇몇 참가자들은 심지어 우리가 지나갈 때 울기도 했어.

 

When we started cycling, many people cheered for us.

우리가 사이클링을 시작했을 때, 많은 사람이 우리를 응원했지.

 

But you had to endure some strong winds and tiredness.

하지만 너는 강한 바람과 피곤함을 견뎌야만 했어.

 

So I cycled very fast to give you a break.

그래서 나는 네가 쉴 수 있도록 아주 빨리 페달을 밟았어.

 

When we began running, your mom seemed to say, “I wish I could run with you.”

우리가 달리기 시작했을 때, 너의 엄마가 “당신과 함께 달릴 수 있으면 참 좋겠다.”라고 말하는 듯했어.

 

I wanted to finish the race quickly so I could see her and let you rest.

빨리 경주를 끝내서 너의 엄마를 보고 네가 쉬도록 하고 싶었어.

 

So, I ran fast. When we were almost at the finishing line, the other participants stopped and let us go first.

그래서 나는 빨리 달렸단다. 우리가 거의 결승선에 도착했을 때, 다른 참가자들이 멈췄고 우리가 먼저 가도록 해 줬어.

 

Eunchong, you were the winner!

은총아, 네가 우승자였단다!

 

I hope you could tell how much everyone at those races loved you. 

아빠는 네가 그 경기에 있던 모든 사람이 너를 얼마나 사랑했는지 알았기를 바란다.

 

Thanks to you, your mom and I learned an important lesson.

네 덕분에, 너의 엄마와 나는 중요한 교훈을 배웠단다.

 

“Love is all we need.”

“사랑이 우리가 필요한 전부다.”

 

We don’t ever think, “We wish Eunchong had no disabilities” anymore.

우리는 이제 더는 절대 ‘은총이가 장애가 없으면 좋겠다.’라고 생각하지 않아.

 

Instead, we are just thankful for having you.

대신에 우리는 너를 가진 것에 그저 감사할 뿐이야.

 

We are also happy about many other little things.

우리는 또한 많은 다른 작은 것들에 대해서도 행복해.

 

Even when we face difficulties, we are happy.

심지어 우리가 어려움에 직면할 때도, 우리는 행복하단다.

 

That’s because we know that we can overcome any hardships when we are together and love each other.

왜냐하면, 우리는 우리가 함께이고 서로를 사랑할 때 어떤 어려움도 극복할 수 있다는 것을 알기 때문이지.

 

Let’s continue to live happily and bravely.

우리 계속해서 행복하고 용감하게 살아가자.
