Haenyeo, Female Divers of Korea

해녀, 한국의 여성 잠수부

For the past several years, the underwater photographer Zin Kim has promoted the culture of Jeju haenyeo worldwide.

지난 몇 년 동안, 수중 사진작가 Zin Kim은 제주 해녀 문화를 전 세계에 홍보해 왔다.

 

Haenyeo are Korean female divers who harvest seafood without any breathing devices.

해녀는 어떤 호흡 장치도 사용하지 않고 해산물을 채취하는 한국의 여성 잠수부들이다.

 

Their culture made UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016.

그들의 문화는 2016년에 유네스코 무형문화유산에 등재되었다.

 

At her studio last week, Zin Kim was interviewed about her experience of taking pictures of haenyeo.

지난주 그녀의 작업실에서, Zin Kim과 해녀 사진을 찍는 그녀의 경험에 대해 인터뷰를 했다.

 

Q. How did you become interested in taking photos of haenyeo?

Q. 어떻게 해녀의 사진을 찍는 것에 관심을 가지게 되었나요?

One day, I happened to take pictures of a haenyeo.

어느 날, 저는 우연히 한 해녀의 사진을 찍게 되었어요.

 

I was surprised to find that she was enjoying her job.

저는 그녀가 자신의 일을 즐겁게 하는 것을 보고 놀랐습니다.

 

Until then, I had only seen black-and-white photos of haenyeo who looked very tired.

그때까지, 저는 흑백 사진 속의 아주 지친 모습의 해녀만 봐 왔죠.

 

However, she kept laughing even after she had been in the water for over five hours.

하지만, 그녀는 다섯 시간이 넘도록 물속에 있은 후에도 계속 웃었어요.

 

I realized then that I should take pictures of haenyeo.

저는 그때 해녀의 사진을 찍어야겠다고 깨달았어요.

 

Q. You take beautiful pictures of them, but isn’t it difficult to take pictures of haenyeo?

Q. 작가님은 아름다운 해녀 사진들을 찍으시는데, 그들의 사진을 찍는 것이 어렵진 않으신가요?

At first, they didn’t understand why I wanted to take their pictures.

처음에, 그들은 제가 왜 자신들의 사진을 찍으려고 하는지 이해하지 못했어요.

 

They didn’t think they looked pretty in their wetsuits.

그들은 잠수복을 입은 자신들의 모습이 예뻐 보인다고 생각하지 않았으니까요.

 

I said to them, “You’re very special. I want to show your culture to the world.”

제가 그들에게 말했죠, “여러분들은 아주 특별해요. 저는 여러분의 문화를 세계에 알리고 싶어요.”

 

They opened up to me then.

그들은 그때 제게 마음을 열었어요.

 

Of course, I also promised them that I would make them look beautiful in my pictures.

물론, 저 또한 그들에게 제 사진 속에서 그들을 아름답게 보이도록 하겠다고 약속했지요.

 

Q. Could you tell us more about haenyeo? What’s so special about them?

Q. 해녀에 대해서 더 말씀해 주시겠어요? 그들은 무엇이 그렇게 특별한가요?

I can tell you three things. First, haenyeo are a symbol of strong women.

세 가지를 말씀 드릴게요. 첫 번째로, 해녀들은 강인한 여성의 상징이에요.

 

Jejudo, which is a volcanic island, is not suitable for farming, so many haenyeo have become the breadwinners for their families.

제주도는 화산섬이고, 이는 농사에 적합하지 않아서 많은 해녀들이 가족들의 생계비를 버는 가장이 되어 왔어요.

 

Second, haenyeo form their own communities and help each other.

둘째로, 해녀들은 그들 자신의 공동체를 조직하고 서로 도와요.

 

For example, more-experienced haenyeo train less-experienced haenyeo.

예를 들어, 경험이 더 많은 해녀들이 경험이 적은 해녀들을 훈련시키지요.

 

Third, because they stay in the water without any breathing devices, haenyeo can’t catch a lot of seafood.

세 번째로, 어떤 호흡 장치도 사용하지 않고 물속에 머물기 때문에, 해녀는 많은 해산물을 채취할 수가 없어요.

 

This is good for the underwater environment.

이것은 수중 환경에 좋은 것이지요.

 

Catching too much marine life at one time in one place can destroy the ocean.

한 번에 한 장소에서 너무 많은 해양 생물을 채취하는 것은 바다를 파괴할 수 있으니까요.

 

Q. Lastly, please tell us what you’re planning to do in the future.

Q. 마지막으로, 앞으로 계획하고 있는 것에 대해 말씀해 주세요.

I once attended an overseas exhibition with a couple of haenyeo to give a talk about their lives.

예전에 두 명의 해녀와 함께 그들의 삶에 대해 이야기하기 위해 해외에서 열리는 박람회에 참가한 적이 있어요.

 

When I finished my talk, one of the haenyeo held my hand tightly.

제가 연설을 마쳤을 때, 해녀 중 한 분이 제 손을 꼭 잡았어요.

 

She said to me, “Thank you so much. I’ve never known in my whole life that I was such a special person.”

그분이 말했죠, “너무 고마워. 내 평생 내가 이렇게 특별한 사람이라는 걸 미처 알지 못했어.”

 

She was crying with happiness.

그녀는 행복해서 울고 있었어요.

 

Everyone in the audience was deeply moved.

청중들 모두가 깊은 감동을 받았어요.

 

I can never forget that moment, so I’ll continue to take pictures of haenyeo.

전 그 순간을 절대 잊을 수가 없기 때문에 해녀의 사진을 계속해서 찍을 거예요.

 

I want to tell more beautiful stories about them to many more people in the world.

저는 그들에 대한 더 많은 아름다운 이야기들을 세계의 더 많은 사람들에게 알려 주고 싶어요.
