비르발 이야기

Akbar, the third Mogul emperor, had a number of wise officials at his court.

악바르는 무굴 제국의 제3대 황제로, 자신의 궁정에 많은 현명한 신하들이 있었다.

 

Among them was a man whose name was Raja Birbal.

그 중 라자 비르발이라는 이름의 한 사람이 있었다.

 

He was famous for his quick wit and was very wise with his words.

그는 재빠른 재치로 유명했으며 말이 매우 지혜로웠다.

 

Thus, the emperor always liked to have Birbal near him.

그래서, 황제는 언제나 비르발을 곁에 두고 싶어 했다.

 

Sweet Punishment

달콤한 처벌

To test his officials' wisdom, Akbar often asked them strange questions.

신하들의 지혜를 시험해 보기 위해, 악바르는 종종 그들에게 이상한 질문을 했다.

 

One day, he came up with an interesting question.

어느 날, 황제는 재미있는 질문이 생각났다.

 

Akbar: Someone pulled a hair from my head today.

악바르: 오늘 어떤 이가 내 머리에서 머리카락을 잡아당겼소.

 

What should I do to him?

이 자를 어떻게 해야 하겠소?

 

Official 1: He should be punished, of course.

신하 1: 당연히 처벌해야 합니다.

 

Official 2: Yes, punish him!

신하 2: 예, 그를 처벌하소서!

 

Akbar turned to Birbal.

악바르가 비르발을 돌아보았다.

 

Akbar: What would you do if you were in my place, Birbal?

악바르: 그대가 내 입장이라면 어떻게 하겠소, 비르발?

 

Birbal: If I were you, I would give him sweets.

비르발: 소신이 폐하라면, 그에게 사탕을 주겠습니다.

 

Official 3: What's he talking about?

신하 3: 저 사람은 무슨 말을 하는 거야?

 

Official 4: Birbal's crazy!

신하 4: 비르발이 정신이 나갔어!

 

Akbar: What made you say so?

악바르: 왜 그렇소?

 

Birbal: The person who pulled your hair must be your grandson.

비르발: 폐하의 머리카락을 잡아당긴 사람은 폐하의 손자임이 분명합니다.

 

No one else could do such a thing.

다른 그 누구도 그런 짓을 할 수 없지요.

 

Akbar: You are indeed correct, Birbal.

악바르: 과연 그대의 말이 맞소, 비르발.

 

I'm so glad to have someone as wise as you near me.

그대처럼 현명한 자를 옆에 두어 정말 기쁘오.

 

A Potful of Wisdom

한 항아리의 지혜

One day, the king of Persia sent an official with a strange favor.

어느 날, 페르시아의 왕이 이상한 요청과 함께 신하를 보냈다.

 

Persian official: I hear you have a lot of wise men in your country.

페르시아의 신하: 폐하의 나라에 현명한 자들이 많다고 들었습니다.

 

I've been asked by my king to bring him a potful of wisdom.

저는 저의 왕으로부터 한 항아리의 지혜를 가지고 오라는 명을 받았습니다.

 

Official 5: That makes no sense! How can we put wisdom in a pot?

신하 5: 저건 말이 안 되오! 어떻게 지혜를 항아리에 넣을 수 있단 말이오?

 

Akbar: Can you bring him a potful of wisdom, Birbal?

악바르: 그에게 지혜 한 항아리를 가져다줄 수 있겠소, 비르발?

 

Birbal: It won’t be a problem.

비르발: 문제될 것이 없사옵니다.

 

Birbal: Could you please wait a few weeks?

비르발: 몇 주만 기다려 주겠습니까?

 

Persian official: Of course! Take as much time as you need.

페르시아의 신하: 물론이오! 필요한 만큼 얼마든지 시간을 가지시오.

 

A few weeks later, Birbal came back with two pots whose necks were really narrow.

몇 주 후, 비르발은 목이 매우 좁은 두 항아리를 들고 돌아왔다.

 

He offered one to the Persian official.

그는 하나를 페르시아 신하에게 줬다.

 

Birbal: You can take this pot of wisdom to your king.

비르발: 이 지혜의 항아리를 그대의 왕께 가져다드리십시오.

 

Please ask him to return the pot to us after he takes the wisdom out of it.

왕께서 이 항아리에서 지혜를 꺼낸 후에는 항아리를 우리에게 돌려달라 전해 주십시오.

 

Birbal: The pot is very precious, so please be careful not to break it.

비르발: 그 항아리는 매우 귀중한 것이니, 그것을 깨지 않도록 조심해 주십시오.

 

We only have two pots of wisdom.

우리는 오직 두 개의 지혜의 항아리만 갖고 있습니다.

 

The Persian official looked inside the pot and became speechless.

페르시아 신하는 항아리 안을 들여다보곤 말을 잃었다.

 

He thanked Birbal and left for his country.

그는 비르발에게 감사를 표한 뒤 그의 나라로 떠났다.

 

Persian official: It would be great if there were a man as wise as Birbal in our country.

페르시아의 신하: 우리나라에도 비르발처럼 현명한 자가 있다면 정말 좋을 텐데.

 

After the Persian official left, Akbar asked Birbal what was inside the pot.

페르시아의 신하가 떠난 뒤, 악바르는 비르발에게 항아리 속에 무엇이 있었는지를 물었다.

 

Birbal: Here is the other pot. You can see for yourself.

비르발: 여기 또 다른 항아리가 있습니다. 직접 살펴보시지요.

 

Akbar looked inside the other pot and found a pumpkin just as big as the pot.

악바르는 또 다른 항아리 안을 보고 꼭 항아리만한 크기의 호박을 발견했다.

 

Akbar: I see! The pumpkin can't be taken out without breaking the pot.

악바르: 그렇군! 항아리를 깨지 않고는 호박을 꺼낼 수가 없겠어.

 

How did you do it?

어떻게 한 것이오?

 

Birbal: I put the pots over pumpkin flowers and waited until the pumpkins grew as big as the pots.

비르발: 항아리를 호박꽃에 덮어 놓은 후 호박이 항아리만큼 클 때까지 기다렸습니다.

 

Akbar: Hahaha! This certainly is a potful of wisdom!

악바르: 하하하! 이건 정말로 지혜의 항아리구려!
